Since Russell Athletic decided to illegally and immorally shut down Jerzees de Honduras in retaliation for worker organizing, the subsidiary of Warren Buffett's Fruit of the Loom has faced censure from colleges and universities, retailers, and community members. United Students Against Sweatshops has joined with SITRAJERZEESH, the Honduran factory union, in demanding that Russell Athletic reopen Jerzees de Honduras. Hundreds of you have met the President and Vice-President of the factory union as well as a key member of the Negotiating Committee- Moises Elias Montoya Alvarado, Norma Estela Mejia Castellanos, and Mirna Lizeth Chavarria Lopez.
To date, USAS and these leaders of SITRAJERZEESH have traveled to dozens of cities across North America asking colleges, universities, retailers, and community members to join the campaign to pressure Russell Athletic to do the right thing. Nearly 70 universities have answered this call, joining the collegiate boycott against Russell, almost 50 of which were terminations of licensing contracts. 65 members of Congress have written a letter to Russell Athletic urging them to redress these violations. JC Penny's has discontinued their business with Russell. The boycott of Russell is only gaining strength by the day!
Watch Norma Estela Mejia Castellanos, the Vice-President of SITRAJERZEESH, confront Warren Buffett and thousands of Berkshire Hathaway shareholders here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rZaDcuUBGk
Stand in solidarity with Norma and her 1800 co-workers that Russell left with nothing but industrial diseases, injuries, and death threats after cutting and running from their unionized factory. Join the campaign! Contact Rod at rod@usas.org or Jack at jack@usas.org for more info on how to get involved during the summer!
